Approximately between 2012 and 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still clearly defined and maintained in 2011, but by 2015 it shows significant signs of disuse, with vegetation growth and vehicle tracks crossing it, indicating it was no longer active.
Economic and logistical reasons related to industrial expansion. The airstrip was privately operated for the adjacent Amistad Industrial Park. As the park grew, the land occupied by the runway became more valuable for building new manufacturing facilities and storage yards. Furthermore, the proximity and capabilities of the main Ciudad Acuña International Airport (MMAC) likely made a separate, private airstrip redundant and not cost-effective to maintain.
The site is no longer an airport and has been repurposed for industrial use. The land has been absorbed by the expanding Amistad Industrial Park. The former dirt/gravel runway is now partially or completely covered by industrial buildings, open-air storage lots, and access roads. The faint outline of the original runway is still visible in some undeveloped sections on satellite maps, but it is completely unusable for any aviation activity.
El Mosco Airport was a private airstrip whose primary function was to support the maquiladora industry within the Amistad Industrial Park. Its strategic importance was providing direct, convenient air access for corporate executives, engineers, potential clients, and high-value cargo. This allowed personnel to travel directly to the industrial hub, bypassing the main commercial airport. It primarily handled general aviation traffic, including small single and twin-engine propeller aircraft and potentially light business jets, facilitating business operations for the numerous international companies with factories in the park.
There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening El Mosco Airport. The land has been permanently redeveloped for industrial purposes. Any aviation needs for Ciudad Acuña and its industrial parks are fully served by the nearby Ciudad Acuña International Airport (IATA: ACN, ICAO: MMAC).
