Approximately 2007-2008. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airport was still intact in 2006 but had clear 'X' markings on the runways, indicating permanent closure, by 2009. Industrial construction on the site began shortly thereafter.
Economic reasons and urban development. The land was re-zoned and sold for the development of the 'Parque Industrial La Huérfana'. The city's growth and the high value of land for industrial use, particularly for maquiladoras (factories), made it more economically viable to redevelop the site rather than maintain a secondary general aviation airport. The city's aviation needs were already being met by the larger Ciudad Acuña International Airport (MMCC).
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the 'Parque Industrial La Huérfana' (La Huérfana Industrial Park). The main north-south runway has been paved over and converted into a major public road, 'Boulevard La Huérfana,' which serves as the main artery for the industrial park. The entire area of the former airport is now occupied by large industrial facilities, factories, and warehouses. No original airport structures like hangars or a terminal building remain.
La Huérfana Airport was a general aviation airfield that served Ciudad Acuña for many years. It was the primary landing strip for the city before the current international airport (MMCC) assumed that role. Its operations consisted mainly of private aircraft, business charters, air taxi services, and agricultural aviation. Due to its strategic location directly on the U.S.-Mexico border across from Del Rio, Texas, it was a key point for cross-border private and business travel, supporting local commerce and ranching activities in the region.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening. The site has been irreversibly transformed into a major industrial park with critical infrastructure and public roads built directly over the former runways and airport grounds. The city's aviation requirements are fully served by the active Ciudad Acuña International Airport (IATA: ACN, ICAO: MMCC), making a second airport at this location unnecessary and unfeasible.
