Approximately between 2005 and 2007. The exact date is not officially documented, but pilot reports and the construction timeline for the Paraiso del Mar resort indicate the airstrip ceased operations during this period as development began.
Real estate development. The land occupied by the airstrip was acquired for the construction of a large-scale, master-planned luxury resort community. The value of the land for tourism and residential purposes far exceeded its value as a private general aviation airstrip, leading to its permanent closure and redevelopment.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now occupied by the 'Paraiso del Mar' resort and residential community. The former runway's alignment is still partially visible, with sections having been paved over and repurposed as an access road (Paseo de las Olas) within the development. The majority of the former airstrip and surrounding land is now an 18-hole championship golf course, luxury homes, condominiums, and hotel facilities.
El Mogote Airport was a private/general aviation dirt and gravel airstrip known for its convenience and scenic location. Its primary role was to serve private pilots, tourists, and members of the 'Aero Club Aéreo La Paz'. It allowed small aircraft (such as Cessnas, Pipers, and Beechcraft) to land directly on the El Mogote sand spit. From there, pilots and passengers could take a short water taxi across the bay to downtown La Paz, often making it a quicker and more picturesque alternative to using the main Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (MMLP/LAP). It was a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts, particularly from the United States, exploring Baja California.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening El Mogote Airport. The land has been permanently and extensively redeveloped with high-value infrastructure, including a golf course and residential housing built directly on and adjacent to the former runway. Reactivating it as an airport is logistically, legally, and economically infeasible. All air traffic for the region is handled by the nearby Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (IATA: LAP, ICAO: MMLP).
