The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery and regional security trends indicates the airport ceased operations and was abandoned sometime between the mid-2000s and the early 2010s. Imagery from 2004 shows a well-maintained facility, while by 2013 it appears derelict and unused.
While no single official reason has been published, the closure is widely attributed to a combination of factors. The primary driver was likely the severe escalation of cartel-related violence in the state of Tamaulipas during that period. Small, relatively unsecured airfields like Comales became high-risk areas, often targeted for illicit use by criminal organizations. This security risk, combined with economic non-viability and the consolidation of regional air traffic to the larger, more secure Reynosa International Airport (REX) located about 60 km to the east, made continued operation untenable.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. Current satellite imagery confirms the site is derelict. The paved runway remains clearly visible but is in a state of severe disrepair, with significant cracking and vegetation growing through its surface. There are no longer any buildings, hangars, or other airport infrastructure on the site. The land is not being used for any other purpose and is surrounded by agricultural fields.
Comales Airport was a small general aviation airfield serving Ciudad Camargo and the surrounding agricultural region. Its primary function was likely to support local agriculture, including crop-dusting operations ('fumigación aérea'). It also catered to private pilots and small business aviation, facilitating travel within the region and potentially across the nearby U.S.-Mexico border. The airport never had scheduled commercial passenger service and its infrastructure was minimal, consisting of a single paved runway (approximately 1,500 meters / 4,900 feet) and basic support facilities.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Comales Airport. The lack of economic demand, the significant cost required to repair the runway and rebuild infrastructure, the persistent security challenges in the region, and the proximity to the fully operational Reynosa International Airport make its reactivation economically and logistically infeasible. The airport is considered permanently defunct.
