Los Pilares Airport

No official reason for the closure has been published. As a small, private rural airstrip ('aeropista'), the most probable cause of closure is economic or logistical. This typically includes the cessation of the private owner's operations, a change in land ownership, or the owner no longer having a need for a private air facility. It was not closed due to a major accident or military conversion.

The airport is abandoned and non-operational. Current satellite imagery shows the dirt runway is still clearly visible but is in a severe state of disrepair. The surface is heavily eroded, overgrown with desert vegetation, and completely unsuitable for any aviation activity. The site has not been repurposed and is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert environment.

Los Pilares Airport was a private general aviation airstrip. Its primary role was to provide air access to a remote area in the Ojinaga municipality, likely serving a large private ranch or agricultural enterprise. Operations would have been limited to small, single-engine propeller aircraft (like Cessna or Piper models) capable of using a short, unpaved runway. Its significance was entirely local, used for transporting personnel, light supplies, or for ranch management, with no history of commercial, public, or military use.

There are no known plans, proposals, or prospects for reopening Los Pilares Airport. Given its remote location, the extensive cost required to restore the runway and facilities, and the lack of any apparent economic or logistical demand, the likelihood of it ever being reactivated is extremely low to non-existent.
