While an exact official closure date is not documented in public records, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the airstrip fell into disuse and deterioration throughout the 2000s and early 2010s. The site was permanently repurposed for new construction starting around 2018, marking its definitive end as an airfield.
The closure was due to economic reasons and land redevelopment. The land occupied by the underutilized airstrip was acquired for the construction of a large-scale renewable energy project, which represented a more economically valuable use of the property. The airstrip was not converted for military use, nor was its closure attributed to a specific accident.
The site of the former airstrip has been completely redeveloped and is now occupied by a large photovoltaic power station. It is part of the Villanueva Solar Park, one of the largest solar energy facilities in Latin America, operated by Enel Green Power. The original runways have been entirely removed and are now covered by thousands of solar panels and associated infrastructure.
Benito Borrego Castillo Airstrip was a small general aviation airfield that primarily served the agricultural and private transportation needs of San Pedro de las Colonias and the surrounding Laguna Region, a major agricultural hub. Its operations would have consisted mainly of small, single-engine aircraft for private flights, air taxi services, and extensive aerial application (crop dusting) for local crops like cotton and melons. The 'X' configuration of its two unpaved runways was typical for small airfields, allowing for takeoffs and landings in varying wind directions. It did not handle scheduled commercial passenger traffic.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airstrip. The land has been permanently and completely transformed into a major, long-term energy infrastructure project. Re-establishing an airfield at this location is not feasible and there are no known plans or discussions to do so.
