Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2017. The civilian airstrip ceased public operations when the property was officially acquired by the Mexican Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) for redevelopment. Major construction on the new military facility began shortly thereafter.

Reason for Closure

Military Conversion. The airstrip was permanently closed to civilian traffic to be redeveloped into a modern military air base. The Mexican Navy selected the location for the construction of the new 'Base Aeronaval de La Paz' to enhance its operational capacity in the region.

Current Status

The site has been completely transformed and is now the active 'Base Aeronaval de La Paz' (La Paz Naval Air Base). The original dirt strip has been replaced with a modern, paved runway, taxiways, large hangars, barracks, and administrative buildings. It is a fully operational military installation for the Mexican Navy, housing aircraft and helicopters for maritime patrol, surveillance, and search and rescue operations in the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean.

Historical Significance

Before its closure, El Conejo was a popular and well-regarded dirt airstrip primarily serving the general aviation community. It was a key landing spot for private pilots, particularly tourists from the United States, flying small aircraft for recreational purposes such as fishing, diving, and exploring the Baja California peninsula. Its informal nature and location outside the busier airspace of the main La Paz International Airport (MMPL) made it a convenient and favored destination for private aviation enthusiasts.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the facility to civilian or public use. It has been permanently converted into a strategic military asset for the Mexican Navy, and its current function as an active naval air base precludes any possibility of returning to its former status as a public airstrip.
