Approximately 1990. The airport's closure coincided with the construction and inauguration of the new, current Navojoa National Airport (IATA: NVJ, ICAO: MMNA).
The primary reason for closure was urban encroachment. The city of Navojoa expanded significantly, eventually surrounding the airport. This made flight operations increasingly hazardous due to proximity to residential and commercial areas, and it also prevented any potential expansion of the runway or facilities. A new, larger airport was built at a safer distance from the city center to accommodate modern aircraft and safety standards.
The site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the urban landscape of Navojoa. The former airport grounds are now occupied by major commercial centers like 'Plaza Goya', various retail stores, restaurants, and extensive residential subdivisions ('fraccionamientos'). Major roads, including Bulevar Centenario, now traverse the former runways. While the faint 'X' shape of the old runway layout is still partially visible from satellite imagery in some undeveloped plots, the land is almost entirely repurposed.
This was the original airport serving Navojoa and the surrounding Mayo Valley, a significant agricultural region. It was a vital piece of infrastructure for decades, handling general aviation and regional commercial passenger and cargo flights. It connected Navojoa to other Mexican cities, supporting business, trade, and the region's economic growth. Airlines like Aeronaves de México (the predecessor to Aeroméxico) operated services from this airport, likely using propeller aircraft such as the Douglas DC-3.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been sold and redeveloped for high-value urban use, making a return to aviation activities impossible. Furthermore, the city is adequately served by the modern Navojoa National Airport (MMNA), which is located in a more suitable area and has superior facilities.
