Old Bacoachi Airstrip

The primary reason for the closure was its replacement by a new, superior facility. The town of Bacoachi is now served by the Bacoachi Airport (ICAO: MMBH), located approximately 4 kilometers northeast of the old airstrip. The new airport features a paved runway, modern facilities, and better all-weather operational capabilities, rendering the old, unpaved dirt strip obsolete and unnecessary.

The site is completely abandoned and the airstrip is defunct. Current satellite imagery shows the faint, ghostly outline of the former north-south dirt runway. The entire area is overgrown with desert scrub and vegetation, making it completely unusable for any aviation purposes. There are no remaining buildings, hangars, or infrastructure on the site. The land has effectively reverted to undeveloped rural land.

The Old Bacoachi Airstrip served as a fundamental utility airfield for the remote, rural community of Bacoachi. Its operations were exclusively focused on general aviation. It was a vital link for local ranchers, farmers, and business owners, providing private air transport. The airstrip was also likely used for agricultural aviation (crop dusting) to support the region's farming activities and potentially for air taxi services or emergency medical evacuations to larger cities like Hermosillo. It represented a critical piece of infrastructure for the community before it was superseded.

There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening the Old Bacoachi Airstrip. With the fully operational and superior Bacoachi Airport (MMBH) serving the community's needs, there is no economic, logistical, or practical reason to invest in restoring the old, primitive airstrip. Its role has been permanently superseded.
