The exact date is unknown as no official announcement was made. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the airstrip was well-maintained and likely active in the early 2000s but shows signs of disuse and lack of maintenance beginning in the late 2000s. It was definitively closed by the early 2010s, likely falling into disuse sometime between 2008 and 2012.
No official reason for the closure has been publicly documented. As a private airstrip, the most probable cause is economic or a change in ownership. The ranch it served may have been sold, or the owner may no longer have had the need or financial resources to maintain and operate a private runway. The gradual decay visible in satellite imagery is consistent with abandonment rather than a sudden event like an accident or government seizure.
The airstrip is abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery shows a clearly defined dirt/grass runway of approximately 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) that is unmaintained and becoming overgrown with vegetation. While the outline of the runway is still visible from the air, it is not suitable for any aviation activity. The land appears to be used for ground vehicle access to different parts of the ranch property, with tracks crossing the former runway.
El Cohete Airstrip was a private general aviation airfield, also known as 'Rancho El Cohete Airstrip'. Its significance was purely local, serving the transportation needs of the private ranch on which it was located. Operations would have consisted of light, single-engine, or small twin-engine aircraft used for personal or business travel for the ranch's owners and guests. Given its location in an agricultural region, it may also have supported agricultural aviation activities such as crop dusting. It held no public or commercial significance and did not handle scheduled flights.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the El Cohete Airstrip. Reinstating the airfield would require significant investment from the private landowner to clear and restore the runway, as well as recertification from Mexico's Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil (AFAC). Given its remote location and private nature, there is no apparent economic or logistical incentive for its reopening.
