Circa 2011-2012
The airfield was forcibly closed and disabled by the Mexican military (SEDENA) as part of a nationwide crackdown on clandestine airstrips ('pistas clandestinas'). Its location in a strategic corridor in the state of Nuevo León, near the US border, made it valuable for drug cartels. It was identified and neutralized for its role in illicit logistics, likely for the trafficking of narcotics, weapons, and personnel.
The site is abandoned and the airfield is defunct. Satellite imagery confirms the runway remains intentionally disabled with large, deep trenches dug perpendicularly across its entire length, rendering it completely unusable for any aviation activity. The area is overgrown with vegetation, and any associated structures appear to be in a state of decay.
Originally a private, rural airstrip with a single unpaved runway (~3,900 ft / 1,200 m). In its legitimate capacity, Huizachitos Airfield likely served general aviation, agricultural activities (such as crop dusting), and provided air access for local ranch owners. Its primary historical significance, however, stems from its later, illicit use as a clandestine airfield by organized crime groups, which ultimately led to its targeted closure by government forces.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Huizachitos Airfield. Given that it was deliberately destroyed by the military to disrupt criminal operations, and the lack of any announced economic or strategic need for its restoration, it is almost certain to remain permanently closed.
