Approximately 1965. The exact date is not publicly documented, but its closure coincided with the inauguration of the new, larger General Pedro J. Méndez International Airport (CVM/MMCV) in 1965, which replaced La Misión as the primary airport for Ciudad Victoria.
Replacement and obsolescence. The airport was closed because it was replaced by the modern General Pedro J. Méndez International Airport. The new airport was built to accommodate larger aircraft and handle the growing air traffic demands for the state capital, rendering the smaller and less-equipped La Misión facility obsolete for commercial operations.
The site has been completely converted into a military installation. The former airport grounds are now part of the base for the Mexican Army's 77th Infantry Battalion (77/o. Batallón de Infantería). The original runway is still clearly visible from satellite imagery but is unmaintained and is used as a service road, parade ground, and training area for the military. The surrounding area is developed with barracks, administrative buildings, and vehicle depots.
La Misión Airport was the original primary airport for Ciudad Victoria, the capital city of the state of Tamaulipas. During its operational years, it handled all commercial, general, and government aviation for the city. It was a key piece of infrastructure connecting the state capital to the rest of Mexico during the mid-20th century, prior to the nationwide modernization of Mexico's airport network.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening La Misión Airport. The land has been fully repurposed for critical military use for over 50 years. The city of Ciudad Victoria is adequately served by the General Pedro J. Méndez International Airport, making a second airport unnecessary. Reopening would require the complete relocation of a major army battalion, which is highly improbable.
