Approximately between 2018 and 2020. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was deliberately rendered unusable with trenches and berms sometime in 2018-2019. By 2020, major construction had begun on the site, completely obliterating the former airstrip.
The primary reason for the closure was the large-scale expansion and modernization of the Sonoyta-Lukeville Port of Entry. The airstrip was located on the land required for new customs inspection lanes, administrative buildings, and support infrastructure for the Mexican Aduana (Customs) and immigration services. Its closure was a planned part of this major binational infrastructure project.
The site of the former airstrip is now completely occupied by the newly constructed and expanded facilities of the Sonoyta Port of Entry. The original runway no longer exists and has been replaced by modern customs inspection bays, secondary screening areas, administrative buildings, and large parking lots for commercial and passenger vehicles. The area is an active, high-security federal zone dedicated to border crossing operations.
The name 'Aduana de Sonoyta Airstrip' indicates its primary historical function was to support the Mexican Customs agency at this critical border crossing. When active, it was a dirt/gravel runway approximately 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) long. Operations likely included:
- **Government & Law Enforcement:** Used by Mexican federal agencies (Customs, Immigration, Federal Police, Military) for personnel transport, aerial surveillance, and logistical support in the remote border region.
- **General Aviation:** Served light general aviation aircraft, providing air access to Sonoyta for business, tourism, or private transport. Given its location, it would have been a strategic landing point for individuals conducting cross-border business.
- **Medical Evacuation:** Potentially used for emergency medical flights from the Sonoyta area to larger cities with more advanced medical facilities.
Effectively zero. The original site has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped with critical government infrastructure. There are no known plans to relocate or build a new airstrip to replace it. Any future airport for Sonoyta would require the acquisition of new land and a completely new construction project, for which there are no current public proposals.
