Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

The aerodrome was closed to public and civilian use circa 2015. The closure was not a formal decommissioning but rather a military takeover of the facility.

Reason for Closure

The primary reason for its closure to civilian traffic was its conversion into a military airbase. The region, known as Tierra Caliente in the state of Guerrero, is an area of significant drug cartel activity. The airfield was reportedly being used for illicit logistics by organized crime. To counter this and establish a strategic presence, the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) took control of the facility to use it for counter-narcotics and security operations.

Current Status

The site is currently an active military installation operated by the Mexican Armed Forces (SEDENA / Fuerza Aérea Mexicana). It functions as a Forward Operating Base for surveillance, troop transport, and counter-organized crime operations in the state of Guerrero. Satellite imagery confirms the runway is maintained and military infrastructure is present on the site. It is strictly off-limits to civilian access.

Historical Significance

Prior to its closure, Aeródromo Arcelia was a small but important regional airfield. It primarily served general aviation, including private aircraft, air taxi services, and agricultural aviation (crop dusting). It provided a vital transportation link for the local agricultural and mining communities in the isolated Tierra Caliente region of Guerrero, connecting them to larger cities and facilitating business and medical transport more rapidly than the challenging ground routes.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the aerodrome to civilian or commercial traffic. Given its strategic importance as a military base in a high-conflict zone and the persistent security challenges in the region, it is highly probable that it will remain under military control for the foreseeable future.
