Approximately early 2000s. While an exact date is not officially documented in public records, the airport ceased operations as its primary user, PEMEX, phased out its use in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Primarily due to economic and logistical reasons. The airfield, operated by Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), became redundant as road infrastructure in the region improved and helicopter transport became a more efficient and targeted method for accessing specific oil and gas facilities. The cost of maintaining a fixed-wing airfield for dwindling traffic was no longer justifiable for the company.
The airport is closed and in a state of abandonment. Satellite imagery shows the paved runway is still largely intact but exhibits significant signs of disuse, with faded markings and vegetation encroachment. The site is reportedly used unofficially by locals for non-aviation activities such as driving practice, drag racing, and as a local shortcut. The facilities are not maintained, and the airport is not operational in any capacity.
The airport was of significant logistical importance for the state-owned oil company, Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX). It served as a private airfield to support the extensive oil and gas operations in the Huimanguillo municipality of Tabasco, particularly the nearby 'Complejo Procesador de Gas La Venta'. It handled the transport of personnel (engineers, technicians, executives), light cargo, and emergency services, connecting the remote industrial sites to larger hubs like Villahermosa and Mexico City during the peak of the region's oil production. It was a critical piece of infrastructure before the local highway network was fully developed.
There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening La Ceiba Airport. The original purpose for its existence has been superseded by modern transportation infrastructure (improved highways) and more flexible air transport (helicopters). The proximity of the much larger Carlos Rovirosa Pérez International Airport (IATA: VSA) in Villahermosa, which adequately serves the region, further diminishes any economic or logistical case for its reactivation.
