Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

November 2017. The parent vessel, SSCV Hermod, was officially retired from service and departed on its final voyage from Rotterdam to a recycling facility on November 12, 2017. The dismantling and recycling process was completed in 2018.

Reason for Closure

Decommissioning of the parent vessel. The 'airport' (MX-0185) was not a land-based airport but the helideck of the Semi-Submersible Crane Vessel (SSCV) Hermod. After a nearly 40-year operational life, the vessel was retired due to its age and the availability of newer, more capable vessels. It was sold for environmentally responsible recycling, which constituted the permanent closure of its helideck.

Current Status

The site no longer exists. The SSCV Hermod, the vessel which hosted the helideck, was sailed to the Zhoushan Changhong International Ship Recycling yard in China. It was fully dismantled and its materials (primarily steel) were recycled. The physical structure of the helideck ceased to exist upon the vessel's scrapping.

Historical Significance

The SSCV Hermod, owned by Heerema Marine Contractors, was a legendary and pioneering heavy-lift vessel. Launched in 1978, it and its sister ship Balder were the world's first semi-submersible crane vessels, revolutionizing the offshore construction industry. The Hermod was responsible for installing hundreds of offshore platforms and modules in oil and gas fields globally, including major projects in the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and Southeast Asia. In the region of Ciudad Del Carmen (Bay of Campeche), the Hermod performed critical installation and maintenance work for PEMEX. The helideck (designated MX-0185 in some aviation databases) was a vital operational component, used for helicopter flights to transport crew, equipment, and for medical evacuations to and from shore bases like Ciudad del Carmen International Airport (MMCE). The coordinates provided (18.927222, -92.671667) represent a typical operational position in the Gulf of Mexico, as the vessel was mobile.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. The helideck was an integral part of the SSCV Hermod vessel. Since the vessel has been permanently and completely dismantled, there is no possibility of the helideck reopening.
