Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

April 30, 2011

Reason for Closure

Catastrophic structural failure and sinking of the platform. The SSV Jupiter I was a semi-submersible oil drilling platform, not a traditional land-based airport. On April 30, 2011, while undergoing maintenance and positioning operations near the Abkatun-D platform, it suffered a structural failure in one of its pontoons. This caused the platform to take on water, list, and ultimately sink to the seabed. The helideck, being an integral part of the platform, was destroyed and ceased to exist along with the entire structure. All 73 crew members were safely evacuated before the final sinking.

Current Status

The site is the location of a sunken wreck. The entire SSV Jupiter I platform, including the helideck, lies on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico at the specified coordinates. The location is an underwater maritime hazard and is marked as such on nautical charts. There is no surface structure or operational facility at this location.

Historical Significance

The SSV Jupiter I Helideck (MX-0184) was a critical piece of transportation infrastructure for the Mexican offshore oil industry. Its primary function was to facilitate helicopter operations for the Jupiter I drilling rig, which was owned by the company 'Perforadora Central' and contracted to the state oil company, PEMEX. The helideck handled the regular transport of personnel for crew changes, the delivery of urgent equipment and supplies, and served as a vital point for medical evacuations from the remote offshore location. As part of the vast network of oil platforms in the highly productive Campeche Sound (Zonda De Campeche), it played a direct role in supporting Mexico's oil exploration and production efforts.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening. The original facility was completely destroyed and is unrecoverable from the seabed. The concept of 'reopening' is not applicable; it would require the construction and deployment of an entirely new multi-million dollar drilling platform at the site, which would then be assigned a new identifier.
