Sometime prior to 2002. While the exact date is not documented in public records, historical satellite imagery from 2002 clearly shows the runway marked with large white 'X's, the standard visual indicator for a permanently closed runway. This indicates the airfield ceased operations before this time.
Economic and operational consolidation. The airfield was a private facility, likely owned and operated by a large agricultural enterprise (such as the similarly named Compañía Agrícola Transpacífico) in the region. The closure was not due to a military conversion or a specific major accident. Private airfields of this type are often closed for reasons including: the parent company changing its business model, the high cost of maintenance and compliance, or the consolidation of aviation activities at the larger, nearby Valle del Fuerte International Airport (MMLM) in Los Mochis, which offers more comprehensive services.
The site is decommissioned but still recognizable as an airfield. The single asphalt runway (formerly 13/31, approximately 1,500 meters / 4,921 feet) is still physically intact but is in a state of disrepair with visible degradation. Large white 'X' markings remain painted on the runway thresholds, clearly indicating its closed status. The land immediately surrounding the runway is actively used for large-scale agriculture, and the former airfield grounds have been integrated into these farming operations. Any associated buildings, such as hangars, are likely being used for storing farm equipment or as agricultural processing facilities.
Transpacifico Airfield's significance was primarily commercial and logistical, serving the agricultural industry of the Valle del Fuerte, one of Mexico's most productive farming regions. When active, its operations would have consisted mainly of:
1. **Agricultural Aviation:** Supporting crop dusting (fumigación aérea), seeding, and aerial surveying of the vast farmlands surrounding it.
2. **Corporate/Private Transport:** Used by light aircraft for transporting company executives, personnel, and essential parts or supplies to and from the remote agricultural operations.
It was not a public airport and did not handle scheduled passenger or cargo services. Its role was to provide direct, on-site air support for a specific agricultural business, a common practice for major enterprises in this area.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Transpacifico Airfield. Reopening is considered highly improbable due to several factors:
- **Proximity to a Major Airport:** The fully-equipped Los Mochis International Airport (MMLM) is located just 25 km (16 miles) to the southeast and adequately serves the region's aviation needs.
- **Economic Viability:** The land is more valuable for its current use in high-yield agriculture than as a private airstrip.
- **Lack of Demand:** The original operational need for the airfield has likely been superseded by more efficient ground transportation and the services offered by the nearby international airport.
