Approximately mid-to-late 1970s. An exact official date is not readily available, but the closure coincided with the urban development of the area, which began in earnest during this period.
The primary reason for the closure was urban encroachment and real estate development. As the city of Torreón expanded eastward, the land occupied by the airport became highly valuable for residential housing. Operations were consolidated at the larger, more modern Francisco Sarabia International Airport (TRC), making La Joya Airport redundant and its location incompatible with the new surrounding urban landscape.
The site has been completely redeveloped into a large, middle-to-upper-class residential neighborhood called 'Fraccionamiento La Joya'. The airport's infrastructure is gone, but its legacy is preserved in the urban layout. The main X-shaped runways were paved over and converted into the primary avenues of the neighborhood, most notably 'Paseo de la Joya' and 'Calzada de la Joya'. The distinct cross-runway pattern is still clearly visible from satellite imagery, forming the foundational street plan for the entire district.
La Joya Airport was the original primary civil airport for Torreón and the surrounding Laguna Region. Before the full development and expansion of the current Francisco Sarabia International Airport (TRC), La Joya handled the majority of the region's general aviation, air taxi services, and flight school operations. It was a vital hub for private pilots, aerial fumigation services for the local agriculture industry (a key economic driver), and early regional air transport. It represented a significant era in the city's aviation history before operations were shifted to the more capable TRC facility.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been fully and densely occupied by residential homes, parks, schools, and commercial establishments for several decades. Re-establishing an airport on this site is physically, legally, and logistically impossible.
