Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2004-2005. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the airfield was intact through early 2004. By late 2005, major construction was underway that completely bisected and built over the runway. The conversion was finalized by 2006.

Reason for Closure

Military Conversion. The airport and surrounding land were officially repurposed by the Mexican government (SecretarĂa de la Defensa Nacional - SEDENA) for the construction of a new, permanent military base. The decision was based on national security needs rather than economic or operational issues with the airport itself.

Current Status

The site is now the location of the 'Cuartel Militar de Tecate' (Tecate Military Barracks), which serves as the base for the 2nd Motorized Cavalry Regiment (2/o. Regimiento de CaballerĂa Motorizado) of the Mexican Army. The former runway, taxiways, and any associated hangars have been completely demolished. The property is now fully developed with barracks, administrative buildings, vehicle depots, parade grounds, and other military infrastructure. The outline of the former runway is no longer visible.

Historical Significance

Tecate Airport was a small general aviation airfield that served the city of Tecate and the surrounding region, including the burgeoning wine country. It primarily handled private aircraft, light charter flights, and potentially agricultural or utility aircraft. It consisted of a single unpaved (dirt/gravel) runway and minimal facilities. While not a major commercial hub, it provided a vital air link for private pilots, local business owners, and tourists, connecting the border city to other parts of Mexico and facilitating cross-border general aviation.

Reopening Prospects

There are no plans or prospects for reopening Tecate Airport. The site has been permanently and strategically converted into an active military installation. Reverting the land to civilian airport use would require the complete relocation of a significant army regiment, making it highly improbable.
