Katumbi Airport

Katumbi Airport was a small, unpaved airstrip that served the remote village of Katumbi in the Rumphi District of Malawi's Northern Region. Its primary historical significance was providing essential connectivity for an isolated community. When active, it would have been used for:
- Government and administrative access to the region.
- Medical services, potentially including emergency evacuations or visits from 'flying doctor' services.
- Missionary activities, as many remote airstrips in the region were established and used by missions.
- Limited logistical support for local projects.

Operations were exclusively handled by light, single-engine, STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, such as Cessna or Piper models. All flights would have been unscheduled and operated under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), as the airstrip had no navigation aids, lighting, or significant facilities.

There are no known plans or official prospects for reopening Katumbi Airport. Re-establishing the airstrip would be a significant undertaking, requiring land acquisition from current residents and farmers, extensive clearing, and complete reconstruction of the runway. Given the lack of a major economic driver (such as large-scale tourism, mining, or industry) in the immediate vicinity, there is currently no economic or strategic justification for the substantial investment that would be required. The airport is considered permanently closed.
