Early 2011, shortly after January 29, 2011.
The airfield was permanently closed by a prefectural order following a fatal ultralight (ULM) aircraft accident. On January 29, 2011, a ULM crashed during an instructional flight, resulting in the deaths of the instructor and a student pilot. The accident investigation and subsequent safety concerns led the authorities to cease all aviation operations at the site.
The site of the former runway is no longer used for aviation and is not maintained. The land has been fully integrated into the public recreational area of Plage du Coin, a popular beach in Le Carbet. The visible strip of land is now primarily open space used for beach access, parking, and events. A well-known beach restaurant and club, 'Petibonum', is located at the southern end of the former airstrip. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure.
Le Carbet Aerodrome was a small, coastal airstrip primarily used for recreational and training flights of ultralight (ULM) aircraft. Its scenic location on the 'Plage du Coin' (Coin Beach) made it a popular base for the local ULM club and for offering tourist flights along Martinique's Caribbean coast and near the famous Mount Pelée. It was a private or club-operated field, not a public commercial airport, but it served as an important hub for the island's light aviation community.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the aerodrome. The closure was a definitive regulatory decision following a fatal incident. The land's current and successful use as a high-traffic public beach and commercial recreational area makes the resumption of flight operations extremely unlikely due to significant safety, liability, noise, and land-use conflicts.
