Circa 2012-2014. The airport was phased out and officially closed following the construction and full operational launch of the new, modern Bluefields Airport (IATA: BEF, ICAO: MNBL).
The airport was closed due to being replaced by the new Bluefields Airport (MNBL). The El Bluff airfield was outdated, had a shorter runway (approximately 980 meters / 3,215 feet), and was located on a peninsula highly vulnerable to weather events, storm surge, and flooding. The new airport was built further inland with a longer, paved runway and modern facilities to better serve the region and safely accommodate larger aircraft like the ATR-42 used by the national airline. The closure was based on economic, safety, and logistical reasons, making El Bluff Airport redundant.
The airport is permanently closed and has been repurposed. The site is now occupied by a base for the Nicaraguan Naval Force (Fuerza Naval de Nicaragua). Satellite imagery confirms the presence of military buildings, naval vessels, and other infrastructure on and around the former runway. The runway itself is no longer maintained for aviation, is partially obstructed by new structures, and serves as part of the military installation.
For decades, El Bluff Airport was the primary and vital air link for the city of Bluefields and the entire South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (RACCS) of Nicaragua. It played a crucial role in connecting this geographically isolated region with the capital, Managua, and the rest of the country. The airport primarily handled domestic passenger and cargo flights, with the main operator being the airline La Costeña. It typically serviced smaller turboprop aircraft, such as the Cessna 208 Caravan. The airport was essential for government administration, commerce, tourism, and personal travel before its replacement.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening El Bluff Airport. The prospect is considered effectively zero. The region is now adequately served by the superior Bluefields Airport (MNBL), and the former airport's land has been permanently converted for strategic military use by the Nicaraguan Navy, making its return to civilian aviation service both unnecessary and unfeasible.
