Approximately early 2011. The airfield was officially replaced and ceased all operations upon the inauguration of the new, modern Ségou Airport (ICAO: GASS, IATA: SZG) on January 22, 2011.
Replacement and obsolescence. The old airfield was a rudimentary, likely unpaved laterite or dirt airstrip with minimal infrastructure and a short runway. It was incapable of handling modern aircraft. As part of a national plan to improve transportation infrastructure, it was replaced by the new Ségou Airport (GASS), a larger, modern facility with a 2,000-meter paved runway, a terminal building, and proper navigation aids, located east of the city.
The site is completely abandoned and defunct. High-resolution satellite imagery shows that the former north-south runway has been entirely reclaimed by nature and is now used for agriculture. The faint outline of the strip is barely visible, covered by vegetation and farmland. There are no remaining airport buildings or infrastructure on the site. The land has been fully repurposed and is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
This was the original airfield for the Ségou region, likely established during the French colonial era to serve administrative and logistical needs. For decades, it was the primary air link for the city, handling light aircraft for government travel, mail delivery, medical evacuations, and limited passenger/cargo services. It connected Ségou to the capital, Bamako, and other regional centers like Mopti. Operations were typically conducted by small propeller aircraft such as the Douglas DC-3 or smaller bush planes, which were essential for transport in a region where road travel could be difficult and time-consuming.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening this old airfield. All aviation services, investment, and future development for the Ségou region are concentrated at the new, fully operational Ségou Airport (GASS). The old site is permanently closed and its land has been returned to agricultural use.
