The exact date of final closure is not officially documented, but it is estimated to have occurred in the late 1990s or early 2000s. The process was gradual, with aviation activities ceasing as the city of El Jadida expanded around it.
The primary reason for the airport's closure was urban expansion. As El Jadida grew, the land occupied by the airfield became highly valuable for real estate and urban development. The airport's location, once on the outskirts, was enveloped by new neighborhoods. Furthermore, its role became redundant due to the proximity and efficiency of the much larger Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) in Casablanca, located approximately 100 km away, which serves the entire region for all commercial and international traffic.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the city's urban fabric. The most prominent structure built on the former airport grounds is the Mohammed VI Exhibition Park (Parc d'Exposition Mohammed VI), a large, modern convention and exhibition center. The surrounding area is now developed with roads, commercial buildings, and residential housing. While faint outlines of the former runway were visible on satellite imagery for a time, it is now almost entirely obscured by this new construction. The site is a prime example of urban regeneration, transforming obsolete infrastructure into a modern civic and economic hub.
El Jadida Airport was a small, secondary airfield, not a major commercial hub. Its history is tied to the French Protectorate era in Morocco, when numerous such airstrips were built for administrative, postal, and recreational purposes. When active, it primarily handled general aviation, including light private aircraft and the operations of the local flying club, the 'Aéro-Club de Mazagan'. It served as a base for recreational flying, pilot training, and potentially some limited agricultural or air taxi services. It never hosted scheduled commercial passenger flights and did not have an IATA code for this reason.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening El Jadida Airport. The original site is no longer available, having been fully built over. The region's aviation needs are comprehensively met by Mohammed V International Airport (CMN). Any future development of a new airfield for El Jadida would require acquiring a new, large plot of land far outside the current urbanized area, an undertaking for which there is currently no stated demand or economic justification. The reopening of the original airport is considered infeasible.
