Former Bombah Airport

Military abandonment. The airfield was a temporary, forward military installation built for the desert war. It was no longer strategically required after the Axis forces were defeated in North Africa in May 1943, and it fell into disuse.

The site is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery clearly shows the faint, heavily deteriorated outlines of two former runways and taxiways being reclaimed by the desert sand and scrub. There are no remaining buildings or infrastructure. The site is completely unusable for aviation and exists only as a historical relic visible from the air.

The location corresponds to the historical Bomba Airfield, a key military airbase during the WWII North African Campaign. It was never a civilian airport. The ICAO code 'LY-0006' is a non-official designator, as official Libyan ICAO codes begin with 'HL'. The airfield was strategically important due to its location on the Gulf of Bomba, between the major contested areas of Derna and Tobruk. It was used by both Allied forces (primarily the British Royal Air Force's Desert Air Force) and Axis powers (the German Luftwaffe and Italian Regia Aeronautica) as the front line shifted back and forth. Operations included fighter patrols, bomber missions, and reconnaissance flights supporting ground troops in major engagements like the Siege of Tobruk.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The site is remote, the ground infrastructure is non-existent, and there is no modern economic or strategic need for an airport at this specific location. Its reconstruction would be prohibitively expensive and is not under consideration.
