Official, metered taxis are available 24/7 from the taxi ranks located just outside the arrivals terminal exit. Taxis come in different categories (standard yellow, premium turquoise, and black) with varying fares. Journey times and costs are heavily dependent on traffic and the destination.
Numerous international and local car rental agencies, including Avis, Sixt, Hertz, Enterprise, and Garenta, have service desks located in the arrivals hall. It is advisable to book in advance. A valid driver's license, passport, and a credit card for the deposit are required. Driving in Istanbul can be challenging due to heavy traffic.
The airport is well-connected to the city's public transport network. The M4 Metro line offers a direct connection from the airport terminal to the Kadıköy district on the Asian side, allowing for transfers to the Marmaray rail line and ferries. Additionally, HAVABUS airport shuttles provide comfortable, direct bus services to central locations like Taksim and Kadıköy. IETT public buses also offer more economical, albeit slower, routes to various parts of the city. An Istanbulkart is needed for the Metro and IETT buses.
