Early 1990s (approximately 1993)
Military and economic restructuring. The airfield was an integral part of the Soviet-era Kaunas Helicopter Repair Plant. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the withdrawal of the Soviet Army from Lithuania in 1993, the plant lost its primary military contracts. This led to a drastic reduction in operations and the eventual cessation of its dedicated flight activities, rendering the factory airfield obsolete.
The site of the former factory airfield has been completely redeveloped and absorbed into the urban landscape of the Aleksotas district of Kaunas. The area is now occupied by commercial and light industrial properties, including large retail stores (such as the 'Molas' shopping center), warehouses, and parking lots. There are no visible remnants of the runway or helipads.
The airfield was not a public or general aviation airport but a specialized factory aerodrome. Its sole purpose was to serve the adjacent Kaunas Helicopter Repair Plant (Kauno sraigtasparnių remonto gamykla). During the Soviet era, this plant was a major facility for the overhaul and maintenance of military helicopters, primarily the Mil Mi-8 'Hip' and Mi-24 'Hind' series, for the Soviet Air Force and allied nations. The airfield was used for post-maintenance test flights, ground runs, and the movement of helicopters to and from the repair hangars. It was a crucial component of the Soviet military-industrial complex's aviation maintenance logistics.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening. The land has been fully and permanently redeveloped for commercial use, making any future aviation activity on the original site impossible. The nearby S. Darius and S. GirÄnas Airport (ICAO: EYKS) continues to operate for general aviation, but the specific 'Gamykla' site is gone.
Airport is clossed for civilian aircrfat operations.
