Early 1990s
Economic reasons following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The airstrip was purpose-built for agricultural aviation (crop dusting, fertilizing) to serve the region's Soviet-era collective farms (kolkhozes). With the restoration of Lithuania's independence and the subsequent dissolution of the collective farm system, the economic model and demand that supported the airfield's operation ceased to exist.
The site is officially closed and abandoned for aviation purposes. The single asphalt runway, while visually intact from satellite imagery, is in a state of disrepair and is not maintained. It is frequently and unofficially used by locals for various recreational and non-aviation activities. It has become a popular local spot for informal drag racing, car enthusiast meets, and driver training. There are no remaining aviation facilities, such as hangars or a terminal, on the site.
The airstrip was a typical Soviet-era agricultural aviation base, significant on a local and regional level. It was part of a vast network of similar small airfields established across the Lithuanian SSR. Its primary operations were handled by the state airline Aeroflot's agricultural division. The main aircraft type operated from Panemunelis was the Antonov An-2, a versatile biplane used extensively for aerial application of fertilizers and pesticides. The airfield played a crucial role in the mechanized agricultural model of the Soviet period but had no significant military or passenger transport function.
There are no known official plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Panemunelis Airstrip for any form of regular aviation. The cost of renovating the runway and certifying the infrastructure to meet modern safety standards would be substantial. Given the lack of commercial, strategic, or general aviation demand in the immediate area, its revival as a functional airport is considered highly unlikely.
