Taxis are available 24/7 from the rank located directly outside the arrivals terminal. The journey to Faro city center takes approximately 15 minutes. Fares are metered, but may have surcharges for luggage, night, or weekend trips. Ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt also operate from the airport and are a common alternative.
Several car rental companies, including major international brands (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar) and local providers, have desks located in the arrivals hall. It is highly recommended to book a vehicle in advance, especially during peak tourist season. The car hire parking lots are a short walk from the terminal building. This is a very popular option for exploring the Algarve region.
The main public transport option is the 'Próximo' bus network. Route 16 runs frequently between the airport and the main bus terminal in Faro city center. The journey takes about 20 minutes. From the central bus terminal, you can access regional buses and the nearby Faro train station for connections throughout Portugal. There is no direct train station at the airport.
Faro Airport is the 3rd busiest in Portugal and the 58th busiest in Europe, with as many as 8,700,000 passengers passing through it in 2017. It serves the touristic region of the Algarve, with its many beaches and summer resorts, and like the other 2 International airports in the mainland, it has seen passenger numbers rise by more than 10% each year for the last 6 years.
What you (or your friend) possibly heard/read about was that the airport's infrastructures (terminal, passport areas, etc) have been enlarged to accommodate rising passenger numbers; there was no work done on the runway.
I had a disagreement with a friend who says the Runway has been extended, i have been travelling to faro since 1995 and have not noticed any changes could you clarify this please
