Rome Urbe Airport serves Rome, IT.

Rome Urbe Airport (LIRU) is a civilian airport located in the northern part of Rome, Italy, between Via Salaria and the Tiber River.

Type of facility and operations: It is a small public civilian airport primarily dedicated to general aviation, including private planes, business jets, and flight training. The airport also offers heliport services. It hosts essential services such as air traffic control, ground handling, and fueling. The airport facilities house the Rome Urbe weather station and the Aeroclub of Rome.

Notable features or history: Inaugurated on April 21, 1928, in the presence of Benito Mussolini, it was initially named "Littorio Airport" and served as Italy's main civilian airport until World War II. The Italian national airline, Ala Littoria, was based there. An interesting historical event includes a car/plane challenge in 1931 where a Caproni Ca. 100 defeated an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 on the airport's internal racetrack, Autodromo del Littorio. After suffering severe damage during World War II and subsequent reconstruction, its role shifted to general aviation as commercial air traffic largely moved to larger airports like Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Since 2021, the military area of the airport has been home to the Italian Air Force Band. Its strategic location close to the city center is a significant advantage for travelers.

Current status: Rome Urbe Airport is fully operational, primarily serving general aviation, private flights, and flight schools. It has one runway, 16/34, which is 1,080 meters (3,543 feet) long with a bitumen surface. The airport's hours of operation are generally 06:30 to 21:00 UTC. It is easily accessible by public transport, including bus and train, with Nuovo Salario Station (FL1 line) located 400 meters away. The airport also supports the local aviation community by housing flight schools, maintenance facilities, and various aviation-related businesses. As of April 2026, there are no reported operational issues and the weather is calm and clear.
