Trento-Mattarello Airport (LIDT), also known as Aeroporto G. Caproni or Gianni Caproni Airport, is a civil airfield located approximately 3.4 nautical miles (6.3 km) south of Trento, Italy. It operates as a regional airport supporting general aviation, national, and community tourist traffic.
Type of Facility and Operations: Trento-Mattarello Airport is classified as a civil airport or a midsized airport. Its operations primarily cater to tourist planes, gliders, and helicopters. The airport hosts numerous flying schools and clubs and serves as a base for the Protezione Civile's (Civil Protection) helicopter fleet. It is also a key hub for general aviation and air rescue activities in the Trentino region. The airport's management company, Trentino Trasporti, also oversees 15 strategic helipads and the Tonale airfield for the Autonomous Province of Trento. Services include ground handling, jet fuel, and flight support.
Notable Features and History: The airport holds a rich history, with the first aviators landing in Mattarello in 1913. It was officially named after Gianni Caproni, a pioneer of Italian aeronautics, in 1925, and the Caproni airport and hangar were inaugurated in 1930. The original airport was built by the Austrians in Gardolo in 1914 and later relocated to its current site south of Trento in 1969. After being used for military purposes and sustaining damage during World War II, it reopened to civilian traffic in 1946. Significant historical events connected to the airport include the Norge airship's journey over the North Pole in 1928, Italo Balbo's transatlantic air raid in 1931, and a visit by Pope John Paul II in 1985. Modernization efforts in the 1980s and 1990s included runway expansion and infrastructure upgrades. The airport features a single asphalt runway (18/36) measuring 1,130 by 30 meters (3,707 ft Ă— 98 ft) and sits at an elevation of 610 feet (186 m) above mean sea level. The Gianni Caproni Museum of Aeronautics is located on-site.
Current Status: Trento-Mattarello Airport is currently operational as a civil facility. It is managed by Trentino Trasporti, following the incorporation of Aeroporto Gianni Caproni S.p.A. The airport has seen continuous investments in safety and eco-sustainability to strengthen its role in regional development. Since 2013, the airport and its AFIS (Aerodrome Flight Information Service) unit have extended their service hours to 24 hours. It is equipped with facilities such as an airport hotel (Fly Bike Hotel) and a restaurant. While the airport does not directly publish a METAR (Aviation Routine Weather Report), weather information is available from the nearby Bolzano Airport.
