Astypalaia Island National Airport "Panaghia" (IATA: JTY, ICAO: LGPL) is the sole air gateway to the island of Astypalaia, serving as an essential link to the Greek mainland for both residents and tourists. Its primary importance lies in facilitating access to this relatively remote Dodecanese island, supporting its tourism economy while maintaining a small-scale, manageable operation that aligns with the island's tranquil character.

The airport commenced operations in 1971, an event that significantly improved the island's accessibility. Prior to its opening, Astypalaia was reachable only by sea, a often lengthy and weather-dependent journey. The introduction of air service was pivotal in the development of the island's tourism infrastructure, making it a more practical destination for visitors and strengthening its connection to the rest of Greece.

Located near the settlement of Analipsi (also known as Maltezana), the airport is situated approximately 9 kilometers northeast of the island’s capital, Chora. The drive to Chora or the main port of Pera Gialos typically takes 15 to 20 minutes. Travelers arriving at the airport rely on taxis and rental cars for transport, as there is no scheduled public bus service. Several car rental agencies operate at the airport, but pre-booking is highly recommended, especially during the peak season.

Astypalaia Airport handles exclusively domestic flights, with its main and often only route being a year-round connection to Athens International Airport (ATH). These flights are typically operated by Sky Express and Olympic Air (a subsidiary of Aegean Airlines), often as Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes to ensure consistent connectivity. While service is maintained throughout the year, flight frequency increases substantially during the summer months to accommodate the influx of tourists. The airport serves tens of thousands of passengers annually.

Facilities at the airport are basic, reflecting its small size. The single terminal building houses a check-in area, a small departure lounge, and an arrivals hall. Amenities for travelers are limited to a small snack bar or canteen for refreshments and the desks of car rental companies. There are no lounges, extensive shopping outlets, or varied dining options available.

For a smooth travel experience, it is advisable to arrive 60 to 90 minutes before a scheduled departure. Booking airport transfers in advance is crucial, as the number of available taxis upon arrival can be limited. The airport's compact layout makes it easy to navigate, ensuring a quick and stress-free process from check-in to boarding.
