Ikaria Island National Airport "Icarus" (IATA: JIK, ICAO: LGIK) is the primary air gateway to the Greek island of Ikaria, serving as a vital link for tourism and local residents. Located on the island's northeastern tip near the village of Faros, approximately 12 kilometers from the capital, Agios Kirykos, the airport provides essential connectivity to mainland Greece. Its role is particularly crucial given the island's mountainous terrain and the longer travel times associated with ferry services.

The airport commenced operations on June 14, 1995, marking a significant milestone in the island's development. Its establishment made Ikaria far more accessible, helping to foster the tourism industry that is now central to its economy. The airport operates with a single, relatively short runway and a compact terminal building designed to handle the seasonal flow of visitors. Operations are primarily domestic, with year-round scheduled flights to Athens being the most critical route, operated by carriers such as Aegean Airlines (via Olympic Air) and Sky Express. During the peak summer season, the schedule expands to include flights to other Greek destinations like Thessaloniki and, occasionally, limited international charter flights from European cities. Annually, the airport serves tens of thousands of passengers, with a significant concentration during July and August.

Reflecting its size and traffic volume, the facilities at Ikaria Airport are basic and functional. The single-story terminal houses a check-in area, a baggage claim, and one departure gate. Amenities for travelers are limited to a small café/snack bar that serves refreshments and light snacks. There are no business lounges or extensive retail shops. Access to and from the airport is primarily by road. Taxis are available outside the terminal, and several car rental agencies serve the airport, though it is highly recommended to book both forms of transport in advance, especially during high season.

For travelers, planning is key. While the airport's small size makes navigation simple and check-in processes relatively quick, it's advisable to arrive at least 90 minutes before departure in the summer to accommodate potential queues. Upon arrival, securing transportation is the first priority, as public bus services are not directly integrated with flight schedules. Arranging a pre-booked rental car or a taxi transfer ensures a smooth transition to your final destination on the island.
