RAF Akrotiri (AKT/LCRA) is a large, operational Royal Air Force (RAF) military airbase located in the Western Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri, Cyprus. It serves as an extremely busy Permanent Joint Operating Base and is home to the Cyprus Operations Support Unit, providing critical joint support to British Forces Cyprus and ongoing regional operations.
Type of Facility and Operations: RAF Akrotiri functions as a 24/7 airfield and a forward mounting base for overseas operations in the Middle East. It facilitates fast jet training and its Griffin helicopters perform search and rescue missions in collaboration with Cypriot authorities. The facility also includes a small port.
Notable Features or History: Established on July 1, 1955, the base was initially developed to alleviate congestion at RAF Nicosia and played a significant role during the Suez Crisis in 1956. Historically, it was configured for the storage and launch of British nuclear weapons. Over the decades, it has served as a key transit point for evacuations, such as during the 2006 Lebanon War, and as a staging base for military interventions, including operations in Libya in 2011 and attacks on Iraq and Syria from 2014 onwards. In 2015, the base also processed refugees arriving on British sovereign soil.
Current Status: As of March 2026, RAF Akrotiri remains a critical and highly active military installation. It supports British strategic interests and continues to be used for overseas operations and training. The UK has recently augmented its defenses at Akrotiri with additional air and drone defense systems, radars, and F-35 aircraft. On March 2, 2026, the base experienced a suspected drone strike, though no casualties were reported.
