Early to mid-1990s. A precise date is not publicly available, but the closure coincided with the widespread collapse of the Soviet local aviation network following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991.
Primarily economic. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, the centralized state funding and subsidies for local and regional air travel (known as 'Local Air Lines' or МВЛ - Местные воздушные линии) were eliminated. The new economic reality made operating small regional airports like Shelek, which relied on these subsidized flights, financially unsustainable. The combination of a sharp decline in passenger demand, soaring fuel costs, and the inability to afford aircraft maintenance led to its closure, a fate shared by hundreds of similar airfields across the former Soviet republics.
The airport is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the clear, but heavily degraded, outline of the former runway. The surface is overgrown with vegetation and is unusable for any aviation purposes. The associated infrastructure, such as the small terminal building and service structures, are visible but appear to be in a state of severe disrepair or have been repurposed for local storage. The site is not maintained and is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding landscape.
Shelek Airport was a typical local airfield within the Aeroflot system's Kazakh Civil Aviation Directorate. Its primary function was to provide essential air connectivity for the Enbekshikazakh District, connecting the large village of Shelek (then known as Chilik) with the regional capital, Alma-Ata (now Almaty), and other nearby towns. It handled scheduled passenger flights, mail delivery, and light cargo transport. The airport was also likely a base for agricultural aviation, with aircraft like the Antonov An-2 used for crop dusting and other aerial work. Operations were typically conducted using small, rugged Soviet-era aircraft such as the Antonov An-2 ('Kukuruznik') and possibly the Let L-410 Turbolet. For a time, it was a vital link in the local transportation infrastructure, especially when road travel was slower and less reliable.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Shelek Airport. The development of the modern highway system, particularly the A-2 highway which provides a direct and relatively fast road link to Almaty (approx. 1.5-2 hours by car), makes short-haul air travel from Shelek economically unviable. While Kazakhstan has programs to develop regional aviation, these efforts are focused on upgrading larger, more strategically important regional airports. The reopening of a small, defunct airfield like Shelek is considered highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.
