Approximately 1997-2001. The airport was phased out and permanently closed following the construction and commissioning of the new Kyzylorda Airport (now Korkyt Ata Airport, UATT/KZO), which underwent a major reconstruction completed in 2001.
The airport was closed due to being replaced by a new, modern facility. The old airport had several limitations: a shorter runway unsuitable for larger, modern aircraft; outdated infrastructure; and its proximity to the expanding city of Kyzylorda, which prevented runway extension and posed safety and noise concerns. The new Korkyt Ata Airport was built further from the city to meet modern aviation standards and accommodate future growth.
The airport is permanently closed and decommissioned. The site is undergoing significant urban redevelopment. While the old runway and some taxiways are still visible on satellite imagery, they are degraded and being encroached upon by new construction. Parts of the former airport grounds have been repurposed for commercial and industrial use, including the new 'Salamat' intercity bus terminal which is located on the site. The land is being progressively absorbed into the city's urban fabric.
During the Soviet era and the early years of Kazakhstan's independence, this airport was the primary air gateway for the Kyzylorda region. It was a vital hub for regional transportation, connecting the city with Almaty, Moscow, and other major centers within the USSR. Operations were primarily handled by the Soviet state airline, Aeroflot, and later by its successor in the region, Kazakhstan Airlines. The airport typically serviced Soviet-era aircraft such as the Antonov An-24, Yakovlev Yak-40, and possibly the Tupolev Tu-134, which were the workhorses of regional passenger, mail, and cargo transport across the vast territory.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening this airport. The site's infrastructure is obsolete and has been partially dismantled and built over. The city of Kyzylorda is fully served by the modern Korkyt Ata Airport (UATT/KZO), making the old airport redundant. The land is considered more valuable for urban expansion and commercial development, a process which is already well underway.
