San Antonio International Airport (SAT) serves as the primary commercial airport for the greater San Antonio metropolitan area and a key air travel hub for South Texas. Established in 1941 as Alamo Field, the airport was utilized by the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II before transitioning to full commercial operations. It was officially renamed San Antonio International Airport in 1953 and has since grown to accommodate millions of travelers annually, reflecting the city's status as a major tourist and business destination.
Located approximately eight miles north of downtown San Antonio, the airport is situated near the intersection of two major highways, U.S. 281 and Loop 410, making it easily accessible by car. Travelers can reach the airport via rental cars, taxis, and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft. Public transportation is available through VIA Metropolitan Transit's bus route 7, which provides a direct link between the airport and the downtown area. A Consolidated Rental Car Facility is located on-site, a short walk from the terminals.
As a large airport, SAT handles over 10 million passengers per year. It provides nonstop domestic service to cities across the United States, with major airlines including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines maintaining a significant presence. International flights are also available, with primary destinations in Mexico. The airport operates with two terminals, Terminal A and Terminal B, which are connected post-security.
Terminal A is the larger of the two, handling both domestic and international departures and arrivals. Terminal B serves domestic flights exclusively. Passenger amenities across both terminals include a variety of shops, restaurants featuring local and national brands, and complimentary Wi-Fi. For eligible travelers, lounge access is available at the United Club and American Airlines Admirals Club, and a USO Lounge serves military members and their families.
For a smooth travel experience, passengers are generally advised to arrive 90 minutes to two hours before their scheduled domestic departure. While the terminals are connected airside, travelers with connecting flights should allow ample time to walk between gates, especially if moving from one terminal to the other. Upon arrival, all ground transportation options, including shuttles, taxis, and rideshare pickups, are clearly marked and located outside the baggage claim areas of both terminals.
