Circa 2006-2007. The parent military base, Camp Stanton, was officially closed and returned to the South Korean government on May 4, 2007. Heliport operations would have ceased on or before this date.
The heliport was closed as part of a major strategic realignment of US Forces Korea (USFK). Under the Land Partnership Plan (LPP) and Yongsan Relocation Plan (YRP), the US military consolidated its forces from numerous smaller, Cold War-era bases located near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) into larger, modern hubs further south (primarily Camp Humphreys). Camp Stanton was one of dozens of bases returned to South Korea under this program.
The site of the former Camp Stanton, including the heliport, has been completely demolished. After the land was returned to the Republic of Korea, it was designated for civilian redevelopment. The area is currently being transformed into the Gwangtan Industrial Complex (κ΄νμΌλ°μ°μ λ¨μ§), with significant construction underway to build new industrial facilities.
Camp Stanton Heliport (H-112) was a United States Army facility that provided crucial air mobility and logistical support for Camp Stanton and other elements of the 2nd Infantry Division. Located strategically close to the DMZ, its primary operations included the transport of personnel and supplies, command and control flights, liaison missions, and maintaining constant readiness for medical evacuation (MEDEVAC). The heliport was an essential component of the USFK's forward-deployed defense posture, ensuring rapid response capabilities in a critical region during the Cold War and subsequent decades.
None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The military mission it served no longer exists in that location, the parent base is permanently closed, and the land has been irrevocably repurposed for civilian industrial development. All original aviation infrastructure has been removed.
