The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the closure of the main base, Camp Long. The official closure and flag-casing ceremony for Camp Long was held on June 4, 2010.
The closure was a direct result of a major strategic realignment of United States Forces Korea (USFK). It was part of the Land Partnership Plan (LPP) and the broader Yongsan Relocation Plan (YRP), which aimed to consolidate U.S. forces from numerous small bases across the country into two main hubs in Pyeongtaek (Camp Humphreys) and Daegu. The closure was a planned military force restructuring, not due to economic issues, accidents, or local pressure.
The former site of Camp Long, including the land where the H-416 heliport was located, has been completely returned to the South Korean government and redeveloped by the city of Wonju. The military infrastructure has been demolished. The area is now a mixed-use urban space featuring a large public park, a branch of the National Institute of Scientific Investigation (NISI), commercial properties including the Hotel Inter-Burgo Wonju, and residential developments. The original heliport no longer exists.
Camp Long (H-416) Heliport was a vital military aviation facility supporting the U.S. Army's Camp Long in Wonju, Gangwon Province. For decades after the Korean War, it served as a key logistical and operational hub in the strategically important central corridor of South Korea. The heliport's primary operations included:
- **Logistical Support:** Transporting supplies and equipment to units in the field.
- **Personnel Transport:** Rapidly moving troops for missions, training, and administrative purposes.
- **Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC):** Providing critical life-saving transport from training areas and remote locations to medical facilities.
It was essential for maintaining operational readiness and projecting force in the mountainous terrain of Gangwon Province, supporting various units, including elements of the 2nd Infantry Division, throughout its history.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the H-416 heliport. The military mission it supported in the region has been relocated, the base has been permanently closed, and the land has been fully repurposed for civilian use. Any aviation requirements for the city of Wonju are served by the nearby Wonju Airport (WJU / RKNW).
