Circa 2007. The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the closure of its parent base, Camp Giant. The base was officially closed and returned to the Republic of Korea on May 13, 2007.
Military force realignment. The closure was not due to any specific incident or economic issue, but was part of a broader strategic plan by US Forces Korea (USFK). Under the Land Partnership Plan (LPP) and Yongsan Relocation Plan (YRP), the US military consolidated its forces from numerous smaller bases north of Seoul into larger, consolidated hubs further south, such as Camp Humphreys. Camp Giant was one of dozens of bases closed under this initiative.
The site is abandoned and undergoing redevelopment. The land formerly occupied by Camp Giant, including the heliport, has been returned to the South Korean government. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows the distinct circular helipad is still physically visible but is unused and overgrown. The entire former base area is part of a major urban development project, likely being integrated into the Paju Unjeong New Town (운정신도시), with plans for residential, commercial, and public park facilities. The heliport structure will likely be demolished as redevelopment progresses.
Camp Giant H-163 was a United States Army heliport located at a forward-deployed base just south of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Its primary role was to provide critical air mobility and logistical support for the units stationed at Camp Giant, which often included engineering and artillery battalions. Operations handled by the heliport included the transport of personnel and supplies, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) readiness, VIP transport, and support for tactical exercises. It primarily served US Army helicopters like the UH-60 Black Hawk and was an essential asset for rapid movement in a strategically vital and sensitive region during the Cold War and post-Cold War eras.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. Its closure was part of a permanent military relocation, and the land has been repurposed for civilian urban development by the South Korean government. Its original military function at this location is obsolete.
Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Army_installations_in_South_Korea) indicates that Camp Giant (H-163) is closed.
Camp Giant Heliport (H-163) is located @[37°50’02”N X 126°48’56”E]; Camp Custer North Heliport (C-116) is located @[37°50’03”N X 126°48’56”E]. Is it possible that these two facilities are one and the same or is there a mistake in one or both of them? Please advise as I am totally confused. There is a heliport at H-163.
