Military Base Closure and Realignment. The heliport was part of Camp Greaves, a US Army installation. The camp was closed and returned to the South Korean government as part of the US Forces Korea (USFK) relocation plan. This strategic initiative involved consolidating forces from numerous small bases near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) into larger, centralized hubs further south, such as Camp Humphreys. The closure was a strategic military decision, not due to economic factors or a specific incident.
The entire Camp Greaves site, including the former heliport, has been repurposed into a civilian cultural and historical experience center. Managed by the Gyeonggi Tourism Organization, it is now known as the 'Camp Greaves DMZ Experience Center.' The facility leverages its military history to offer tourism programs, youth hostels, and art projects. It gained international fame as a primary filming location for the popular 2016 South Korean drama 'Descendants of the Sun.' The former helicopter landing pad is now used as open space for events, exhibitions, or parking within the cultural complex.
Camp Greaves Heliport (H-122) was a critical forward operating aviation asset for the United States Army. As the heliport for the northernmost US base in South Korea, located less than 2 kilometers from the DMZ, it played a vital role in Cold War and post-Cold War defense posture. Operations included: rapid deployment of Quick Reaction Forces (QRF) for the 2nd Infantry Division (notably the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment), reconnaissance and surveillance flights along the DMZ, logistical support to the front-line camp, VIP transport, and, most critically, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) capabilities. It operated in a constant state of high alert, handling helicopters such as the UH-60 Black Hawk, OH-58 Kiowa, and their predecessors.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Camp Greaves Heliport for aviation purposes. Its strategic military function has been made obsolete by the USFK realignment. Furthermore, its conversion into a popular civilian tourist destination and its extreme proximity to the North Korean border make a return to active heliport status highly improbable due to security and logistical reasons.
