Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

The airfield closed concurrently with its parent base, Camp Beavers. The camp was officially closed and its flag lowered for the last time on April 29, 2005.

Reason for Closure

Military Base Realignment and Closure. The airfield was a component of a U.S. Army post and was closed as part of the Land Partnership Plan (LPP), a large-scale, long-term agreement between the United States and the Republic of Korea to consolidate U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) onto fewer bases and return vacated land to South Korean control.

Current Status

The site of the former Camp Beavers and its airfield has been completely redeveloped. After the land was returned to South Korea, it was transferred to Yeoncheon County for civilian use. The area, including the footprint of the former runway, is now being transformed into an industrial park and other commercial facilities. The original airfield infrastructure no longer exists.

Historical Significance

Camp Beavers (G-227) Airfield was a forward U.S. Army airstrip located strategically close to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). For over 50 years during the Cold War and beyond, it served as a vital support facility for units of the 2nd Infantry Division. The airfield primarily handled military helicopter operations (such as UH-1 Iroquois and later UH-60 Black Hawks) and small, short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) fixed-wing aircraft. Its main functions were logistical support, rapid transport of personnel and supplies, reconnaissance, and serving as a forward staging point for medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) helicopters.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The closure was part of a permanent military force restructuring, the land has been irrevocably transferred to civilian authorities, and the site is undergoing active redevelopment for non-aviation industrial and commercial purposes.
