The airport was closed and replaced by the current Gimhae International Airport (RKPK). The primary reasons for the relocation were the physical and operational limitations of the Suyeong site. Located in a rapidly urbanizing area, the airport was surrounded by residential and commercial developments, which made runway extensions or other expansions impossible. This also led to significant noise pollution issues for the surrounding communities. The new airport at Gimhae offered a much larger area, allowing for longer runways capable of handling larger, modern jet aircraft and providing ample room for future expansion to meet growing passenger and cargo demands.
The former airport site has been completely and spectacularly redeveloped into 'Centum City', one of Busan's most modern and prestigious urban centers. The area is a major commercial, business, convention, and high-end residential district. Key landmarks on the former airport grounds include:
- BEXCO (Busan Exhibition and Convention Center)
- Shinsegae Centum City, which holds the Guinness World Record for the world's largest department store.
- Lotte Department Store
- The Busan Cinema Center, the main venue for the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF).
- Numerous luxury high-rise apartment complexes and office towers.
The path of the former main runway is now a major road, Suyeonggangbyeon-daero.
Busan Suyeong Airport, also known as Pusan East Air Base (K-9), has a rich history. It was originally established by the Japanese military during the colonial period. Its most critical role came during the Korean War (1950-1953), where as K-9 Air Base, it was a vital logistical hub and frontline air base for the United States Air Force (USAF) and UN forces, as it was safely located within the Pusan Perimeter. After the war, it was converted into Busan's primary civilian airport. It served as the main gateway for domestic and international air travel to the entire southeastern region of South Korea for over two decades, handling all of Busan's commercial air traffic until its closure.
There are absolutely no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and completely redeveloped into a high-value, high-density urban core. Reverting the site to aviation use is physically and economically impossible.
