Approximately late 1950s to early 1960s. The exact date is not officially documented, but the airstrip fell into disuse following the end of major combat operations in the Korean War and the subsequent consolidation of military forces.
Military consolidation and strategic obsolescence. G-808 was a tactical, unpaved airstrip built for the specific needs of the Korean War. After the 1953 Armistice, the US and South Korean forces began consolidating operations into larger, more permanent air bases with paved runways capable of handling newer, heavier jet aircraft. Smaller, forward airstrips like G-808 were no longer strategically necessary and were decommissioned.
The site has been completely repurposed and is now an active military base. It is the location of the Republic of Korea Army's 5th Logistics Support Command (μ 5κ΅°μμ§μμ¬λ ΉλΆ). The original runway is no longer used for aviation but its outline is still clearly visible on satellite imagery. The paved surface of the former runway is now used as a main thoroughfare, vehicle parking area, and driver training course within the military installation.
G-808 Airstrip, also known as Hayang Airfield (νμλΉνμ₯), was a United States Army airfield established during the Korean War. Its primary role was to support frontline ground troops. Located near the critical Pusan Perimeter, it was vital during the intense fighting of 1950 for defending the last UN-held territory. Operations from the airstrip included light transport (e.g., C-47 Skytrain), medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), aerial reconnaissance, and artillery spotting using light observation aircraft like the L-19/O-1 Bird Dog. It was part of a vast network of tactical airfields that provided essential, rapid air support to ground units.
Zero. The land is fully occupied and utilized by a major, active ROK Army logistics command. There are no plans, discussions, or prospects for reverting the site to an airfield. Its original purpose is obsolete, and the land has been permanently reallocated for its current military use.
