Situated approximately 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Atlanta, the airport opened in November 2008, making it the first new airport constructed in Georgia in over 30 years.

It is equipped with precision instrument markings, High Intensity Runway Lights (HIRL), Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL), and a 4-Light/Left-Side PAPI. The airport's primary use is for general aviation and private jet flights, and it houses a fixed-base operator (FBO), Paulding Jet Center, offering fueling services, hangar rentals, and a pilots' lounge. Efforts to introduce scheduled commercial service were made, but the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) closed the commercial certification application in 2018.
