Cairns AAF (Fort Rucker) Air Field (IATA: OZR, ICAO: KOZR) serves Fort Rucker/Ozark, US.

Cairns Army Airfield (KOZR), also known as Cairns AAF, is a military airport located in Fort Rucker/Ozark, Alabama, United States. It is owned by the United States Army and is a crucial component of Fort Rucker, which is recognized as the "Home of Army Aviation."

Type of facility and operations: Cairns AAF is an active military airfield dedicated primarily to training military pilots, particularly helicopter pilots. It is one of the busiest military airfields globally in terms of helicopter take-offs and landings, focusing entirely on the needs of the army and not accepting regular commercial flights. The airfield handles a high density of operations, averaging 800 to 1,000 aircraft movements daily, with an annual traffic count of approximately 240,000 movements. It also hosts the 23d Flying Training Squadron, which trains United States Air Force pilots in the TH-1H.

Notable features or history: Established in September 1942 during World War II, the airfield was originally known as Ozark Army Airfield, serving as a training ground for novice pilots. Following the war, it was acquired by the U.S. Army in 1952 as part of the Fort Rucker complex. In January 1959, it was renamed Cairns Army Airfield in honor of U.S. Army Major General Bogardus Snowden "Bugs" Cairns, who died in a helicopter crash in 1958. The airfield saw significant activity during the Vietnam War, training thousands of helicopter pilots. It has undergone continuous modernization to support contemporary rotary-wing aircraft such as the Apache, Black Hawk, and Chinook. Cairns AAF has two asphalt-paved runways: 6/24, measuring 4,546 feet (1,386 m), and 18/36, measuring 5,025 feet (1,532 m). In 2016, the airfield transitioned its primary trainer aircraft from the TH-67 (Bell 206) to the UH-72A Lakota.

Current status: Cairns Army Airfield remains an operational and vital military installation. It continues to function as the core training facility for U.S. Army aviation, with its infrastructure entirely dedicated to military requirements. The airport is designated for private use, and prior permission is required for landing.
