The airport was permanently closed following the opening of its replacement, the new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (IATA: SAI, ICAO: VDSA). The primary reasons for building a new airport and closing this one were: 1) To increase passenger and cargo capacity to support tourism growth. 2) To accommodate larger, long-haul aircraft. 3) To mitigate the long-term environmental and structural damage that vibrations from low-flying aircraft were believed to be causing to the ancient temples of the nearby Angkor Wat complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The airport is fully decommissioned and all aviation operations have ceased. The land and existing infrastructure, including the terminal and runway, are slated for redevelopment. The Cambodian government has announced plans to transform the approximately 700-hectare site into a mixed-use development, with proposals including a special economic zone (SEZ), a commercial hub, logistics centers, and tourism-related facilities like parks and hotels.
This facility, formerly operating under the codes IATA: REP and ICAO: VDSR, was the main international gateway to Siem Reap and the world-renowned Angkor Archaeological Park for many decades. Originally established in the 1930s, it underwent significant expansion and modernization in the early 2000s to handle a massive influx of tourism. As Cambodia's second-busiest airport, it was instrumental in the country's economic and tourism revival, connecting the historic region to major hubs across Asia and serving millions of travelers annually.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the site as an airport. Its closure is permanent, as its functions have been completely and intentionally transferred to the new, larger, and more distant Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport. The redevelopment plans for the land are focused on non-aviation commercial and public use.
