Not applicable. This airport is not closed; it is a new airport currently under construction and has never been operational. The first phase is projected to open in 2025.
Not applicable. The airport has not been closed as it has never been open. It is being constructed to serve as the new primary international gateway for Phnom Penh, intended to replace the existing Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH/VDPP) which is nearing its maximum capacity.
The site is an active, large-scale construction zone located approximately 20-30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh in Kandal Province. As of mid-2024, construction is reported to be over 70% complete, with major structures such as the passenger terminal, air traffic control tower, and runways in advanced stages of development.
The airport has no operational history. Its significance is entirely forward-looking. As one of the largest infrastructure projects in Cambodia's history, it is designed as a 4F class airport, capable of handling the world's largest passenger aircraft like the Airbus A380. Its purpose is to significantly boost Cambodia's capacity for tourism, air cargo, and economic growth, positioning the country as a more competitive aviation hub in Southeast Asia.
Not applicable, as the airport has never been open. The prospect is for its inaugural opening. The Cambodian government and the project developers are targeting the first half of 2025 for the commencement of operations for Phase 1.
