Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately early to mid-1990s. A precise date is not publicly documented, but the closure coincides with the widespread collapse of local air services across the former Soviet Union after its dissolution in 1991.

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic reasons. Following the collapse of the USSR, the centralized state funding and subsidized fuel that supported Aeroflot's vast network of local air routes disappeared. The newly independent Kyrgyz Republic could not afford to maintain these small regional airports, and passenger demand plummeted due to the severe economic downturn of the era.

Current Status

The airport is completely abandoned and non-operational. The physical site still exists, and its single asphalt runway is clearly visible on satellite imagery. However, the runway is in a state of severe disrepair, with a degraded surface, cracks, and vegetation growth. It is now unofficially used by local residents as an access road for vehicles and livestock to reach adjacent agricultural fields. All associated airport infrastructure, such as a small terminal building, any navigational aids, or hangars, has been dismantled or has fallen into ruin.

Historical Significance

Kirovskoye Airport was a typical Soviet-era local airfield, part of the 'Local Air Lines' (Местные воздушные линии - MVL) network. It served as a vital transportation link for the Kirovskoye district (now Kara-Buura District) in the Talas Region. Its primary function was to connect the local population with the regional capital, Talas, and the republic's capital, Frunze (now Bishkek). Operations were conducted by the Aeroflot Kirghiz Civil Aviation Directorate, likely using rugged and versatile aircraft such as the Antonov An-2. These flights handled low-volume passenger traffic, mail, light cargo, and also supported the region's agricultural sector through services like crop dusting and aerial surveys.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known official plans or realistic prospects for reopening Kirovskoye Airport. The cost of rebuilding the runway and all necessary infrastructure would be substantial, and there is no current economic or logistical demand to justify such an investment. The region is adequately served by ground transportation, and any national efforts to revive regional aviation in Kyrgyzstan are focused on larger, more strategically important airports with existing, salvageable infrastructure.
